Sensex gains 50 pointsHectic buying in the Reliance Industries and select scrips on Thursday pushed up the BSE Sensex further by 50 points on the Bombay Stock Exchange. Speculators, encouraged by the restart of trading on the National Stock Exchange, made heavy purchases in the Reliance scrip on both, the BSE and NSE, during the course of the day, marketmen said. The scrip, which opened at about Rs 364-366 closed at Rs 386, netting a gain of Rs 22 over the previous close. The domestic institutional investors, like GIC, LIC, and UTI were the large sellers of the day, while the foreign institutional investors also reportedly sold at the strong counters, they said. Leading BSE brokers said that the company circles reportedly purchased 5 million Reliance shares on Thursday. Reflecting the trend, the BSE Sensitive Index opened at 3927.85 points, touched the day's high of 3982.44, declined to the day's low of 3917.39 points, and closed at 3979.96 points, showing a net gain of 49.73 points over the previous close of 3930.23 points. The BSE-100 index also firmed up further by 19.59 points to 1719.68 points over the previous close of 1700.09 points. The BSE-200 and dollex indices also closed higher at 384.22 and 176.66 points, over the previous close of 380.34 and 174.97 points respectively. The total turnover on the BSE crossed the Rs 11 billion mark and stood at Rs 11.3 billion over Wednesday's turnover of Rs 6.7 billion. Reliance Industries registered highest business volume at Rs 5.5 billion, followed by ITC Rs 2.1 billion, SBI Rs 760.7 million, Tata Tea Rs 514.8 million and Castrol Rs 289.8 million. Hectic activity was also observed at the other counters like Hind Petro Rs 243.8 million, MTNL Rs 180 million, Bajaj Auto Rs 170.7 million, TISCO Rs 104.3 million, ICICI Rs 96.7 million, BHEL Rs 74.5 million, ACC Rs 71.6 million and Colgate Rs 56.3 million. Good transactions were witnessed in B2 group shares like Bank of India, Sierra Optim, Sheetal Secu, Pennar Alum, Cyber System, Hariy Metal, Infotech Ent, Zenith, Leading Edge, Hind Petro, Gas Auth India, Selan Explor, RS Software, Vin Synth and Reliance Pet.
