Assam governor denies speaking to Sam ManeckshawAssam Governor Lieutenant General (retd) S K Sinha on Tuesday denied having spoken to Field Marshal Sam Maneckshaw in connection with the Tata Tea-ULFA case, currently in court. Referring to a newspaper reports on an alleged telephone conversation between them, the governor said, ''I feel that his so-called conversation with me as mentioned in the telephone tape is a total fabrication. In the army, we never thought or worked on communal or caste lines. It is unbelievable that the field marshal could ever ask me to help Tata Tea because they are his jatwalas (people of his caste). "I have known Field Marshal Maneckshaw since 1946 when he was a lieutenant colonel and I a captain, serving at Army Headquarters. Thereafter, I served under him on five other occasions in different ranks. He is the most distinguished officer of the Indian army and I have the highest personal regard for him,'' said Sinha. ''The last time I met or spoke to Field Marshal Maneckshaw was at Bombay airport on August 20, a day before my appointment as governor of Assam was announced. After that I have not met or spoken to him or received any letter or message from him, he added.
