NSE-50 Index

Nifty declines by 22.8 points

Pivotal prices declined sharply on heavy selling pressure from bull operators and foreign institutional investors on the National Stock Exchange in Bombay here today.

The NSE-50 Index opened steady at 1046.35 points, and after hovering at the same level for some time, touched the day's low of 1014.85 points before closing at 1023.95 points, suffering a loss of 22.80 points as against previous close of 1046.75 points.

The Dollar NSE-50 Index closed at 919.55 points, below yesterday's close of 941.10 points by 21.55 points. The Midcap Index finished at 1159.20 points as compared to last trading day's close of 1186.95 points. The total turnover on the exchange was Rs 20.2 billion, involving 70 million shares.

The top gainers were MTNL by Rs 3.35 to Rs 229.40 and Bajaj Auto by Rs 1.80 to Rs 606.45. Losers were Ashok Leyland by 3.05 to Rs 40.60, Essar Gujarat by Rs 1.15 to Rs 15.70, Ponds by Rs 55.35 to Rs 934.05, Rel Capital by Rs 2.95 to Rs 54.30 and Reliance by Rs 8.3 to Rs 158.65.

ITC led with the highest turnover of Rs 9.5 billion, followed by Tata Tea Rs 2.3 billion, Reliance by Rs 2.1 billion, SBI-N Rs 1.7 billion, Castrol Rs 956.8 million, ACC Rs 501.6 million, MTNL Rs 354.5 million, Bajaj Auto Rs 301.2 million, TISCO Rs 280.2 million, Hind Lever Rs 272.9 million, TELCO Rs 249.3 million, Colgate Rs 188.4 million, BHEL Rs 152.7 million, P&G Rs 118.4 million, Ponds Rs 106.7 million, Infosystch Rs 97.7 million, L&T Rs 83.6 million, Satyam Comp Rs 80.2 million, LML Rs 76.2 million, UTI Mastershare Rs 59.9 million, BSES Rs 58 million, Ranbaxy Rs 42.3 million, ICICI Rs 23.3 million, Penstfware Rs 20.9 million, Rel Capital Rs 19.6 million.
