Nifty declines on a dull day

Pivotals witnessed a gradual decline in a dull trading on the National Stock Exchange on Monday following a lack of buying support from foreign institution investors.

Reflecting the weak trend, the NSE-50 Index opened at 1070.50, touched the day's high of 1074.50 points, fell to touch day's low of 1064.40 points and later ended at 1065.90 points, 8.90 points lower than the previous close of 1074.80 points.

Similarly, the Midcap Index drifted lower by 11.95 points to 1215.05 points as against previous close of 1227.00 points.

The total turnover on the NSE reported during the day was Rs 8.3 billion.

ITC topped the list of turnovers by registering highest turnover of Rs 3.1 billion, followed by Tata Tea 1 billion, Reliance Rs 767.8 million, MTNL Rs 708.7 million and SBI in Rs 502.5 million.

Hectic activity was observed at the other counters like TELCO Rs 265.2 million, Satyam Comp Rs 242.4 million, L&T Rs 181 million, ACC Rs 169 million, Castrol Rs 160.5 million, TISCO Rs 158.3 million, Hind Lever Rs 123.7 million and LML Rs 66.4 million, BHEL Rs 60.3 million, Soft Solution Rs 44.9 million, Ponds Rs 43.6 million, Hero Honda Rs 32.5 million, Sterlite Rs 27.3 million, ICICI Rs 26.7 million, Bajaj Auto Rs 26.1 million, Dr Reddy Rs 25.5 million, Rel Petro Rs 24.7 million, Aptech Rs 19.2 million, IPCL Rs 18.7 million and Colgate Rs 17.5 million.

Among the gainers, Arvind Mill gained by 2.88 per cent to Rs 104.15, M and M up by 0.91 per cent to Rs 355.30, Hind Lever increased by 0.89 per cent to Rs 1337.45, L&T by 0.77 per cent to 190.35 and TELCO gained by 0.58 per cent to Rs 340.15.

Among the losers, Thermax drifted lower by 6.99 per cent to Rs 211.45, Essar Steel down by 5.50 per cent to Rs 20.60, MTNL eased by 5.01 per cent to Rs 222.00, Rel Capital dropped by 3.73 per cent to Rs 58.00, while Ponds moved down by 3.45 per cent to 900.75.
