Nifty gains 22.4 pointsSpeculatives improved moderately on renewed buying support from financial institutions and general investors on the National Stock Exchange in Bombay today. The NSE-50 index opened at 1058.45 points, touched day's high of 1083.35 points, low of 1057.75 points before closing at 1079.40 points, showing a net gain of 20.90 points as against its previous close of 1058.50 points. The Dollar NSE-50 closed at 953.75 points over the last working day's close of 933.70 points gaining 20.05 points. The Midcap index finished at 1189.00 points as compared to yesterday's close of 1166.60 points, increasing by 22.40 points. The total turnover on the exchange was Rs 13.9 billion involving 48.9 million shares. The top gainers were BPCL, Cochin Refin, Rel Petro, MTNL and Mahindra and Mahindra, while the losers were Ashok Leyland and Oriental Bank. The highest turnover was registered by ITC with Rs 6.7 billion followed by SBI-N Rs 1.7 billion, Tata Tea Rs 1.3 billion, Reliance Industries Limited Rs 737.9 million, Castrol Rs 670 million, TELCO Rs 404.8 million, Hind Lever Rs 294.1 million, ACC Rs 287.7 million, MTNL Rs 161.5 million, TISCO Rs 158.1 million, Corp Bank Rs 137.1 million, Larsen and Toubro Rs 132.9 million and BHEL Rs 83.3 million. Other scrips which had good transactions were Colgate (Rs 65.2 million), Bajaj Auto (Rs 64.9 million), HPCL (Rs 54.2 million), LML (Rs 44.9 million), IPCL (Rs 44.8 million), Glaxo (Rs 44.6 million), HDFC (Rs 43.8 million), Novartis (Rs 40 million), BPL (Rs 39.8 million), Bank of Baroda (Rs 39.3 million), Rel Petro (Rs 39.3 million) and Hero Honda (Rs 370 million).
