Nifty declines marginallyPivotals declined moderately following selling pressure from institutional investors and speculators in a range-bound trading on the national stock exchange today. Reflecting the weak trend, the NSE-50 opened at 1011.40, touched the day's high of 1024.35, declined to the day's low of 1002.45 points and later closed at 1006.30 points, showing a net loss of 5.45 points over the previous close of 1011.75 points. The NSE-Defty Index eased by 2.75 points to 897.50 against the previous close of 900.25 points and Midcap Index drifted lower by 2.70 points to 1143.80 points over the previous close of 1146.50 points. The total turnover reported during the day was Rs 15.4 billion. ITC topped the list of turnover by registering highest turnover of Rs 6.7 billion, followed by Reliance Rs 3.1 billion, SBI Rs 1.7 billion, Tata Tea Rs 822.1 million, Corp Bank Rs 440.6 million and TELCO Rs 298.5 million. Hectic activity was observed at the other counters like Castrol Rs 280.8 million, ACC Rs 274.7 million, MTNL Rs 262.3 million, TISCO Rs 219.1 million, Colgate Rs 211.4 million, Hind Lever Rs 156.5 million, BHEL Rs 102.7 million, Bajaj Auto Rs 97.3 million, Infosys Tech Rs 81.5 million, L&T Rs 59.5 million, P&G Rs 42.2 million, ICICI Rs 29.3 million, Satyam Comp Rs 27.8 million, LML Rs 20.1 million, BSES Rs 18.7 million, HDFC Bank Rs 18.1 million, Sterlite Rs 18.1 million, Ponds Rs 16 million and Pentfware Rs 14.6 million. Among the top gainers: Reliance gained by 1.52 per cent to Rs 163.30, ABB up by 1.41 per cent to Rs 496.70, Tata Power increased by 1.41 per cent to Rs 100.95, ITC gained by 1.37 per cent to Rs 625.35 and Ashok Leyland up by 1.17 per cent to Rs 39.00. Among the losers: Colgate dropped by 3.50 per cent to Rs 242.45, Hindalco down by 3.15 per cent to Rs 784.65, TELCO drifted lower by 2.99 per cent to Rs 280.60, Orient Bank eased by 2.42 per cent to Rs 50.25 and IndoGulf down by 2.32 per cent to Rs 35.75.
