ITC helps Sensex rally

The ITC scrip closed higher by Rs 43.25 to Rs 627.25 following heavy purchases by the foreign institutional investors, marketmen ,said and added that among other prominent scrips MTNL looked up by Re 0.75 over the previous close while the petrochemical giant Reliance held steady at the yesterday's level at Rs 158.75.

On the ongoing political issue, marketmen were of the opinion that President K R Narayanan would probably dissolve the Lok Sabha as the major political parties had failed to come forward to form a stable government.

Mirroring the trend, the BSE Sensex opened at 3559.88, touched the day's high of 3590.90, declined to the day's low of 3537.67 and later closed at 3562.37, showing a net gain of 8.89 points over the previous close of 3553.48 points.

Similarly, the BSE-100 Index went up by 3.86 points to 1543.86 against the previous close of 1540.00. The BSE-200 and Dollex Indices finished at 346.41 and 146.23 points over the previous close of 345.72 and 145.64 points respectively.

The total turnover on the BSE has crossed Rs 10 billion mark and stood at Rs 10.3 billion.

ITC stood first in the list of turnover by registering the highest business volume of Rs 6.3 billion, followed by State Bank Rs 748.4 million, Tata Tea Rs 648.8 million, Reliance Rs 588.5 million, Castrol Rs 498 million.

Other actively traded scrips which recorded higher business were ACC Rs 236.6 million, MTNL Rs 213.1 million, TELCO Rs 170 million, Bajaj Auto Rs 157.9 million, BHEL Rs 111.4 million, Hind Lever Rs 63.5 million, TISCO Rs 60.1 million, Mah and Mah Rs 16 million, ICICI Rs 27.9 million and Sterlite Rs 23.9 million.
