Chemical factories to be banned in Sindhudurg district, Maharashtra

Maharashtra Revenue Minister and Guardian Minister for Sindhudurg district Narayan Rane said the state will shortly issue a notification banning chemical factories in the district. This is part of the effort to convert the district into tourist centre, a process which has already begun, he added.

Rane said chemical factories in Sindhudurg, in the Konkan region in southwest Maharashtra, had to be banned to stop pollution in the areas and accelerate the growth of Sindhudurg as a tourist centre.

A detailed plan for Sindhudurg has been prepared, with the government sanctioning Rs 1.48 billion for the same. Another Rs 100 million has been granted for the development of infrastructural facilities, which will be used for electricity and roads, said Rane. He added that a monthly meeting will be held with Chief Minister Manohar Joshi to keep him abreast of the developments.

The revenue minister added that a proposal for the construction of five-star hotels by the Taj, Oberoi and Sidharth Goa has been approved. The land required for these projects is made available and the central government has given permission for a domestic airport at Mhapan. The state government pay for the construction of the airport, the revenue minister said.
