Car, commercial vehicles sales move in top gear in JuneDomestic car sales rose for the first time this fiscal posting a 5.1 per cent growth in June on the back of good sales performance by companies like Tata Engineering, Fiat, Hyundai and Honda Siel. Total sales drove up to 42,343 cars from 40,292 cars in June last year, data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers showed. Car sales during the April-June quarter was, however, down by 7.5 per cent at 114,000 units against 124,000 cars in the same quarter last fiscal, the data showed. Commercial vehicles, an indicator of economic growth, recorded a 29 per cent growth at 14,697 units in June this year (11,390 units in June 2001). Total motorcycle sales jumped 50.2 per cent to 297,000 units (198,000 units) with players like Hero Honda, Bajaj, TVS Motor Co. and Yamaha recording impressive sales growth. But, scooters and scooterettees continued downward trend and fell 16.9 per cent to 70,348 units (84,672 units). Mopeds fared no better as sales dropped by 10.5 per cent to 32,102 units (35,903 units). In the utility-vehicles segment, sales increased by 13.3 per cent to 8,358 units (7,371 units) but that in the multi-purpose-vehicle segment slipped by 4.3 per cent to 4,021 units (4,205 units). Three-wheelers registered a 7.9 per cent growth with sales of 17,318 units against 16,048 units.
