Railways will not be privatised, says Mamata

Railways will not be privatised, Mamata Banerjee told the Lok Sabha on Monday while presenting the Railway Budget for 2001-02.

"We have already set in motion various reform measures and efforts were underway to generate resources through non-traditional sources," she said in her budgetary speech.

"We recognise this cost is not going to be easy at all and cannot be done overnight. A system which remained largely unchanged during five decades would need some amount of time, continuity and perseverance with the full support of not only the central government but the state government's as well," she said .

The minister observed: "The Railways today are standing at a junction station one track takes them to reforms, revival and rejuvenation, while the other track would lead them to a no-where land of crisis and chaos."

"We feel that no reforms can be successful without full involvement of the people and I would like to assure the house that Railways shall not be privatised," she said.
