Govt initiates anti-dumping probe against chemical from China

The government on Thursday initiated anti-dumping investigation against imports of industrial chemical - phosphoric acid - from China.

The Directorate General of Anti-Dumping and Allied Duties (DGAD) under the ministry of Commerce and Industry has initiated the investigation on the basis of a petition filed by Baroda-based Gujarat Alkalies and Chemicals Ltd and Secundrabad-based Bilt Chemicals Ltd.

The investigation has been initiated against imports of technical grade of phosphoric acid, which has a purity level of 85 per cent and above and is used for the production of sodium phosphate, calcium phosphate, magnesium phosphate and ammonium phosphate.

The DGAD will conduct the investigation from the period between April and December, 2000, into the existence, degree and effect of alleged dumping of the subject goods from China.

The investigation has been initiated on the basis of sufficient prima facie evidence that the normal value of the subject goods in China is sufficiently higher than the net export price indicating that the chemical is being dumped into the country.

Because of the dumped imports at low prices, the sales realisation to the domestic industry has been quite low and significantly below the fair selling prices resulting in losses on the sale, DGAD said.
