Ten Indian firms banned from exporting meat to the UAE

Email this report to a friend

Ten Indian meat-exporting companies have been banned from trading in the United Arab Emirates, or the UAE, for not complying with health regulations.

The companies are from Delhi, Bombay, Hyderabad and cities where the bulk of abattoirs, which export meat to the UAE, are located, Gulf News quoted Khalid Sharif, head of the Food Control Section at the Dubai municipality, as saying.

A circular issued by the General Secretariat of Municipalities said the companies had been banned from all the seven emirates.

The newspaper said the companies used to send chilled and frozen lamb products to the Emirates and were banned following an inspection conducted by representatives from the food committee of the General Secretariat.

"They (companies) were found to be not complying with the hygienic requirements of the UAE so they were banned from trading here,'' Sharif said.

"Our people visited India and checked slaughter houses. Some abattoirs were passed, while some were stopped from exporting meat,'' he said.

The inspection in India is part of a regular survey conducted by the authorities of major meat-exporting countries to the UAE.

According to Sharif, companies that were banned could reapply for entry into the UAE market after giving proof of compliance with health standards.

The newspaper did not, however, name the banned companies.
