Divestment panel to meet on Friday

Email this report to a friend

The parliamentary committee on public sector undertakings is meeting on Friday to discuss the issue of divestment.

The meeting of the committee, headed by Vijay Kumar Malhotra, Member of Parliament, is likely to be fiery as the Left parties and those associated with the Swadeshi Jagran Manch of the Sangh Parivar, are opposed to divestment of PSUs 'unless properly tackled'.

Of the 254 PSUs the Divestment Commission has referred 82 for divestment.

There has been considerable acrimony and debate over the government's decision to divest Air-India. There is a view that the government is divesting only profitable units while little is being done about sick PSUs. The Left parties have a reservation on this. The government has set a target of Rs 100 billion from divestment proceeds in the budget.

Last year it was hardly able to garner Rs 15 billion from divestment. This year too the target is Rs 100 billion and the government is keen that this figure is met.
