Fiscal deficit worries economists
Economists today expressed concern over the high level of fiscal deficit in the budget for 2000-2001. They said the revenue-expenditure gap would not allow interest rates to come down. ''India will be among the top ten fiscal deficit nations in the company of countries like Liberia with this level of gap,'' Ashok Lahiri, director, National Institute of Economic Planning and Research said. Lahiri said that the deficit had never been as high since 1991-92 when ''our finance minister had gone on a pilgrimage to Washington with a begging bowl.'' Noted economist Omkar Goswami said the finance minister has not provided aggressive disinvestment model for reducing the revenue gap. UNI
