Background

  • Central Electricity Authority (CEA) estimates that India needs an additional 140,000 MW of electricity at an additional investment of $ 120 billion to meet its requirements in the next 15 years.
  • The all-India installed capacity of electric power generating stations under utilities was 89,166.87 mega watts (MW) as on Mar 31, 1998. As on Mar 31, 1999, this has increased to 93,249 MW consisting of 22,438.48 MW of hydroelectric power, 67,617.46 MW thermal power, 2,225 MW nuclear power and 968.12 MW wind power.

Expectations from the Budget

  • Customs duty on import of equipment for generation, transmission and distribution of power may be reduced.
  • Uniform tariff rates are likely to be introduced for all fuels used in power plants.
  • Higher amount of funds may be allocated for the power sector in the total plan outlay.
  • Projects funded with external commercial borrowings could be granted deemed export benefits.
