Sinha urges Commonwealth nations to adopt similar approach to trade matters

Email this report to a friend

India's Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha today suggested a common approach on trade-related issues by member countries of the Commonwealth to ensure the success of globalisation of the economy.

"If we don't take the right path today, the whole process of pushing economic reforms through liberalisation will be in jeopardy,'' Sinha told Commonwealth Secretary General Don McKinnon.

The two agreed that there was need to extend greater support to small island nations, especially those in the Caribbean region.

Sinha said the developed nations must give due consideration to the needs of developing countries whose rumblings can be felt at various fora through protest groups and lobbies.

McKinnon was appreciative of the increasing role of women in the development process in India, especially at the grassroots level.
