Zee's print wing launches new magazine; Subash Chandra wins E&Y's entrepreneur award

The satellite television broadcaster Zee Network, which has already diversified into news and education channels, has now entered the print medium with separate publications on cinema and television.

Deepak Shourie, publisher and operating partner in Zee Publishing which was formed just over two months ago, has commenced publication of a new monthly journal, TV World.

The magazine will serve as a guide for the viewers by including behind-the-camera news in addition to listings. The new company has also taken over the publication of the film monthly Zee Premiere and Cable Guide which were being published by Zee Telefilms.

Shourie said that television was today an extremely important part of the time spent by people in leisure and for getting news, information and entertainment. Therefore, it was important to inform the viewers not only about the multiplicity of programming but also about what was happening in the world of TV as distinct from cinema.

TV World thus profiles TV channels and personalities apart from carrying programme schedules. These listings have been segmented day-wise and have been bunched slot-wise. Thus, the listing of movie and sports has been separated from the general entertainment channels.

Shourie denied that the publication would be a mouthpiece of Zee TV. The magazine carries articles and listings about other channels as well, he said.

Shourie has been given sweat equity and stock options in Zee Publishing. He is also a member of Zee Network's proposed Strategic Affairs Committee.

After working in some business houses, Shourie had entered the print medium through India Today and was responsible for starting Music Today, the audio cassette wing of Living Media India Limited and also for the tie-up with Time magazine. Later, he became the founder president and publisher of Outlook newsmagazine. Later, he had a brief stint as executive president at The Hindustan Times.
