Operators square long positions; Nifty down seven points to 1390

Pivotals declined moderately at the National Stock Exchange on squaring up of long positions by local operators at the last day of weekly settlement today.

Mirroring the trend, the S&P CNX Nifty Index opened at 1391.20 points, touched the day's high of 1403.75 points, a low of 1378.95 points before closing at 1383.25, showing a net loss of 6.95 points or 0.49 per cent from the previous close of 1390.20 points.

The CNX Nifty Junior, however, rose by 11.50 points to 2490.80 points as against the last close of 2479.30 points.

The S&P CNX Defty ended lower by 6.30 points to 1101.70 points from previous close of 11.08.00 points.

The S&P CNX 500 also dropped by 5.25 points to 978.15 points from 983.40 points. The CNX Midcap 200 moved up by 3.30 points to 897.95 points from 894.65 points.

During the day, the NSE reported a total turnover of Rs 26.03 billion. Today, 551 securities advanced, 582 declined, 69 remained unchanged while 86 securities hit their price bands today.

Ranbaxy registered the highest turnover of Rs 2.77 billion, followed by Pentafour Software Rs 2.05 billion, Satyam Computers Rs 1.88 billion, SBI Rs 1.18 billion, Telco Rs 938.2 million, MTNL Rs 891.2 million.

Other actively traded securities were Apollo Tyres Rs 847.7 million, Reliance Rs 836 million, Global Telesystems Rs 777.3 million, Digital Equipment Rs 772.1 million, L&T Rs 713.4 million, HCL-HP Rs 667.1 million, ITC Rs 629.8 million, Silverline Rs 561.1 million, ACC Rs 520.3 million, BPL Rs 519.3 million, Tata Tea Rs 497.7 million, Tisco Rs 450.5 million, Square D Software Rs 295.7 million, Jaiprakash Industries Rs 295.5 million, Videocon International Rs 291 million, Rolta Rs 284 million, Sterlite Rs 263.7 million and Bajaj Auto Rs 247.8 million.

The major gainers for the day were Indian Rayon Rs 73.90 (Rs 68.40), Reliance Petroleum Rs 43.75 (Rs 40.55), Bank of India Rs 22.80 (Rs 21.60), HDFC Bank Rs 91.05 (Rs 86.65) and Hindustan Petroleum Rs 245.85 (Rs 239.40).

The major losers were M&M Rs 378.80 (Rs 400.75), Novartis Rs 1029.80 (Rs 1075.45), SBI Rs 219.50 (Rs 225.85), East India Hotel Rs 275.20 (Rs 283.10) and TVS Suzuki Rs 695.50 (Rs 715.10).
