Cabinet decided to allow wheat export

The Union Cabinet today took important decisions relating to some agricultural commodities, including allowing the export of up to one million tonnes of wheat.

Briefing reporters about the decisions of the caretaker government, Information and Broadcasting Minister Pramod Mahajan said it had allowed the export of up to one million tonnes of wheat.

"We have a record production this year," he said. "The country has wheat stocks of about six million tonnes. Procurement this year was 14 million tonnes against nine million tonnes last year. One million tonnes of wheat exports are intended for this year."

The government has also decided to allow the export of sugar in value-added terms like cubes and consumer packs of up to 25,000 tonnes.

The export is only for value-added products, Mahajan clarified.

This will be in addition to the quota of 30,000 tonnes of export sugar to the European Union and the United States.
