Speculators, FIIs push prices down; pivotals decline; Nifty down 8 points to 1054.90
Pivotals declined sharply at the National Stock Exchange on the second consecutive day on speculative selling pressure from operators coupled with lack of buying support from foreign institutional investors today. Reflecting the downtrend, the S&P CNX Nifty index opened at 1057.95 points, touched the day's high of 1068.15 points, fell to the day's low of 1053.30 points before closing at 1054.90 points, showing a net loss of 7.90 points as against the previous close of 1062.80 points. The CNX Nifty Junior closed lower by 6.10 points to 1996.10 points from the previous close of 2002.20 points. The S&P CNX Defty came down by 6.45 points to 862.00 points as against the previous close of 868.45 points. The S&P CNX-500 and CNX Midcap-200 also moved down by 3.68 and 1.69 points to 746.27 and 683.18 points as against the previous close of 749.95 and 684.87 points respectively. Total turnvoer on the NSE reported during the day was Rs 23.17 billion from a trading of 67.97 million shares in 277, 953 trades. Debentures traded were valued at Rs 2.4 million. Today, 508 securities advanced, 556 declined, 85 remaining unchanged while 113 securities hit their price bands. Satyam Computer topped the list of turnover by registering the highest turnover of Rs 5.24 billion, followed by Pentafour Software Rs 5.05 billion, ITC Rs 1.76 billion, Rolta Rs 1.26 billion, Silverline Rs 1.19 billion and SBI Rs 1.01 billion. Other actively traded counters were HCL-HP (Rs 510.6 million), Zee Telefilms (Rs 469.1 million), Reliance (Rs 424.6 million), Infosys Technologies (Rs 420.5 million), Tata Tea (Rs 347.5 million), BPL (Rs 278.9 million), Telco (Rs 266 million), Ranbaxy (Rs 252.2 million), L&T (Rs 239 million), ACC (Rs 195.1 million), BHEL (Rs 186.9 million), Tisco (Rs 195.1 million), Tisco (Rs 181.6 million), NIIT (Rs 180.8 million), Digital Equipment (Rs 178.5 million), Videocon International (Rs 173.1 million), Hindustan Lever (Rs 165.3 million), MTNL (Rs 161.3 million) and Global Telesystems (Rs 101.4 million). The gainers were Cipla at Rs 1504.70 (Rs 1393.20), Gujarat Ambuja Cement Rs 293.25, Hero Honda Rs 867.00 (Rs 843.95), HDFC Bank Rs 62.05 (Rs 60.50) and Infosys Technologies Rs 2725.00 (Rs 2675). The losers were Tisco Rs 100.50 (Rs 107), ITC Rs 914 (Rs 960.10), SBI Rs 208.95 (Rs 218.15), Great Eastern Shipping Rs 19.50 (Rs 20.30) and Tata Tea Rs 448.10 (Rs 463).
