Pivotals slide after firm start; Nifty down 10 points to 1062.80

After opening on a firm note, pivotals lost moderately towards the fag end of trading at the National Stock Exchange on speculative selling spree today.

Reflecting the downtrend, the S&P CNX Nifty Index opened at 1091.15 points, touched the day's high of 1091.90 points, fell to touch the day's low of 1047.05 points, before closing at 1062.80 points, showing a net loss of 10.15 points from the previous close of 1072.95 points.

The CNX Nifty Junior fell sharply by 4.20 points to 2002.20 points from the previous close of 2006.40 points. The CNX Defty ended lower by 8.55 points to 868.45 points as against the previous close of 877.00 points.

The S&P CNX-500 eased by 2.00 points to 749.95 points from the previous close of 751.95 points while the CNX Midcap-200 closed higher by 2.01 points to 684.87 points as against the previous close of 682.86 points.

Total turnover on the NSE reported during the day was Rs 27.18 billion from 102.8 million shares in 352,641 trades. Debentures traded were valued at Rs 2.15 million.

Today, 757 securities advanced, 374 declined, 66 remained unchanged while 263 securities hit their price bands.

Satyam Computers topped the list of turnover by registering the highest turnover of Rs 5.03 billion followed by Pentafour Software Rs 3.13 billion, ITC Rs 2.31 billion, Silverline Rs 1.70 billion, Rolta Rs 1.39 billion, SBI Rs 1.16 billion and Reliance Rs 1.07 billion.

Other actively traded counters were Ranbaxy (Rs 650 million), Telco (Rs 618.7 million), HCL-HP (Rs 585.3 million), Square D Software (Rs 540 million), Tata Tea (Rs 526.1 million), Zee Telefilms (Rs 511.9 million), Infosys Technologies (Rs 458.1 million), L&T (Rs 419.8 million), MTNL (Rs 394.9 million), Sterlite (Rs 323.6 million), BHEL (Rs 270.4 million), Digital Equipment (Rs 253 million), BPL (Rs 246.8 million), ACC (Rs 246.7 million), NIIT (Rs 185.1 million), Dr Reddy's (Rs 179.6 million), Global Telesystems (Rs 173.3 million) and Nestle (Rs 154 million).

The gainers were Reliance Capital Rs 30.55 (Rs 28.25), Cipla Rs 1393.20 (Rs 1290), M&M Rs 245 (Rs 228), Nestle Rs 572.90 (Rs 541), HDFC Bank Rs 60.50 (Rs 57.60).

The losers were ACC Rs 1315 (Rs 1405), Gujarat Ambuja Cement Rs 283.05 (Rs 300), Hindalco Rs 426.50 (Rs 452.00), NIIT Rs 1889 (Rs 1998) and Infosys Technologies Rs 2675 (Rs 2790).

The wholesale debt market of the NSE witnessed trades worth Rs 4.15 billion. The 11.98 per cent government maturing in 2004 was traded for Rs 800 million at a weighted yield of 11.56 per cent.

The 12.5 per cent government stock maturing in 2004 was traded for Rs 400 million at a weighted yield of 11.54 per cent. The 11.55 per cent government loan maturing in 2001 was traded for Rs 350 million at a weighted yield of 11.05 per cent. The 11.25 per cent government loan maturing in 2005 was traded for Rs 350 million at a weighted yield of 11.64 per cent.
