Pivotals recover after weak start; Nifty inches up three points to 1063

Market opened on a weak note at the National Stock Exchange. However, pivotals recovered most of their losses towards the fag-end of trading on heavy buying support from foreign institutional investors and bull operators today.

Mirroring the trend, the S&P CNX Nifty index opened at 1052.60 points, touched the day's high of 1066.60 points, fell to the day's low of 1044.10 points, before closing at 1063.00 points, showing a net gain of 2.65 points from the previous close of 1060.35 points.

The S&P CNX Nifty Junior rose sharply by 19.80 points to 2002.75 points as against the previous close of 1982.95 points.

The S&P CNX Defty closed higher by 2.30 points to 868.80 points from the previous close of 866.50 points. S&P CNX-500 and CNX Midcap-200 also gained by 2.79 and 2.64 points to 749.79 and 681.06 points as against the previous close of 747.00 and 678.42 points respectively.

Total turnover on the NSE reported during the day was Rs 26.39 billion from a trading of 82.58 million shares in 310,525 trades. Debentures traded were valued at Rs 8.31 million.

Today, 516 securities advanced, 586 declined, 66 remaining unchanged while 146 hit their price bands.

Satyam Computers posted the highest turnover of Rs 5.54 billion, followed by Pentafour Software Rs 4.29 billion, Silverline Rs 2.78 billion, ITC Rs 1.31 billion, Ranbaxy Rs 1.12 billion, and SBI Rs 1.04 billion.

Other actively traded counters were HCL-HP (Rs 808.6 million), ACC (Rs 550.6 million), Square D Software (Rs 543 million), Rolta (Rs 513.4 million), Reliance (Rs 488.3 million), Zee Telefilms (Rs 439.4 million), MTNL (Rs 351.7 million), Tata Tea (Rs 327.6 million), L&T (Rs 293.4 million), Bajaj Auto (Rs 283.9 million), Digital Equipment ( Rs 249.2 million), BPL (Rs 247.2 million), Sterlite (Rs 235.2 million), NIIT (Rs 223.1 million), Global Telesystems (Rs 214.7 million), Infosys Technologies (Rs 197.1 million), Telco (Rs 158.8 million) and Tata Elexsi (Rs 127.7 million).

The gainers were Great Eastern Shipping at Rs 20.50 (Rs 19), ACC Rs 1,332 (Rs 1,240), Bajaj Auto Rs 595 (Rs 555), ICICI Rs 48 (Rs 45.10) and Ranbaxy Rs 668.75 (Rs 630).

The losers were Tata Chemicals at Rs 76.30 (Rs 82.25), Reliance Rs 128.40 (Rs 132.55), Arvind Mills Rs 31.85 (Rs 32.85), Orient Bank Rs 29.90 (Rs 30.80) and SBI Rs 220.10 (Rs 226.30).
