Nifty lifts to 1072.65, gains 13.05 points
Share prices exhibited a moderate recovery on buying support from bull operators and institutional investors on the National Stock Exchange today. Reflecting the positive sentiment, the Standard and Poor CNX Nifty improved by 13.05 points to 1072.65 points from 1059.60 points the previous day. The CNX Nifty Junior rose by 34.65 points to 1955.95 points and the S&P CNX Defty moved up by 10.85 points to 875.85 points. The S&P CNX 500 index appreciated by 10.73 points to 742.91 points while the CNX Midcap 200 index edged up by 6.36 points to 659.25 points. The total turnover, involving 85.06 million shares in 3,04,902 trades was Rs 27.23 billion and the debentures traded were valued at Rs 2.12 million. About 560 securities advanced, 496 declined while 106 remained unchanged. Eighty scrips hit their price bands today. Among the top S&P CNX Nifty gainers, SBI shot up by 8.02 per cent to Rs 221.55, HDFC bank 7.78 per cent to Rs 58.20, Infosystech 6.72 per cent to Rs 3416, ACC 6.15 per cent to Rs 1295 and Guj Amb Cement 4.52 per cent to Rs 303. The top losers were: GE Shipping which slid by 5.08 per cent to Rs 19.60, Rel Capital 4.37 per cent to Rs 31.70, Hind Petro 3.70 per cent to Rs 188.75, Arvind Mills 3.66 per cent to Rs 34.25 and HDFC 3.41 per cent to Rs 2376. Pentsfware registered the highest turnover of 5.2 billion, followed by Satyam Comp 2.93 billion, SBIN 2.73 billion, ITC 2.24 billion, Zee Tele 1.52 billion, Silverline 1.47 billion, Reliance 940.3 million, Infosystech 780.2 million, Rolta 704.8 million, L&T 575.4 million, Digital Equipment 560.9 million and Sqrdsfware 558.6 million. The other actively traded counters were: Ranbaxy 467.6 million, ACC 426.2 million, Tata Tea 337 million, NIIT 322.3 million, Telco 282.8 million, Hind Lever 218.3 million, Global Tele 204.8 million, Glaxo 188.4 million, MTNL 188 million, Castrol 165.8 million, Tisco 147.4 million and Aptech 141.6 million. The NSE wholesale debt market witnessed trades worth Rs 4.67 billion. The 11.40 per cent government loan maturing in 2000 was traded for Rs 700 million at a weighted yield of 10.84 per cent. The 12.50 per cent government stock maturing in 2004 was traded for Rs 450 million at a weighted yield of 11.56 per cent. The 11.55 per cent government loan maturing in 2001 was traded for Rs 400 million at a weighed yield of 11.05 per cent. The 364 day treasury bill maturing on March 10, 2000 was traded for Rs 400 million at a weighted yield of 10.04 per cent. Repos were transacted for Rs 300 million at a repo rate of 8.69 per cent for a repo term of 14 days each. The total turnover in debentures was Rs 1.26 billion today. UNI
