NSE sees record turnover as Nifty rises 17 points
Pivotals posted gains on good buying support by institutional investors and bull operators at the National Stock Exchange. The NSE witnessed a record turnover of Rs30,932.7 million today. Mirroring the uptrend, the S&P CNX Nifty rose 17.65 points to 1072.10 from its previous close of 1054.45 points. The CNX Nifty Junior also improved by 10.30 points to 1917.65 points while the S&P CNX Defty moved by 15.05 points to 874.30 points. The S&P CNX 500 index appreciated by 7.05 points to 735.01 points and the CNX Midcap 200 index edged up 0.99 points to 646.42 points. The NSE's turnover came from 343,600 trades in 105.6 million shares. The value of debentures traded was Rs7.446 million. While 419 securities advanced on the NSE, 689 declined and 96 remained unchanged, with 110 securities hitting their price bands. The top gainers were Great Eastern Shipping at Rs22.75 (previous: Rs21.05), Grasim at Rs182.55 (169), Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited at Rs254.30 (Rs235.45), MTNL at Rs180.65 (Rs167.25) and Glaxo Rs922.40 (Rs854.05). Prominent among those that shed value were ABB at Rs494.15 (Rs537), Tata Chem at Rs64.90 (Rs69.30), TISCO at Rs111.30 (Rs117.95), IFCI at Rs12.80 (Rs13.40) and IDBI at Rs32.25 (Rs33.75). ITC registered the highest turnover of Rs5540.1 million, followed by Satyam Computers (Rs3268.9 million), Pentafour Software (Rs3191.8 million), State Bank of India (Rs2875.6 million), Silverline (Rs1482.7 million), Reliance (Rs1452.3 million), Castrol (Rs1298.8 million), Zee Telefilms (Rs846.5 million), Digital Equipment (Rs727 million), Tata Tea (Rs679.8 million), L&T (Rs667.7 million), Rolta (Rs622.6 million) and MTNL (Rs620.7 million). The other actively traded counters were: HCL (Rs537.9 million), Infosys Technologies (Rs467.9 million), BHEL (Rs457.8 million), Ranbaxy (Rs439.9 million), TELCO (Rs379.6 million), SquareD Software (Rs288.5 million), Glaxo (Rs272.5 million), ACC (Rs261.3 million), TISCO (Rs258.2 million), NIIT (Rs254.9 million) and Hindustan Lever (Rs209 million). The wholesale debt market of the NSE witnessed trades worth Rs13,544.6 million. The 12.5 per cent government stock maturing in 2004 was traded for Rs1550 million at a yield ranging from 11.50 to 11.59 per cent. The 11.55 per cent government loan maturing in 2001 was traded for Rs1460 million at a yield ranging from 11.05 to 11.11 per cent. The 11.75 per cent government loan maturing in 2001 was traded for Rs1000 million at a yield ranging from 11.04 to 11.10 per cent. The 11.50 per cent government loan maturing in 2006 (series II) was traded for Rs600 million at a yield ranging from 11.76 to 11.81 per cent. The certificate of deposit issued by the State Bank of India and maturing on May 15, 1999, was traded for Rs580 million at a yield of 9.80 per cent. The 14 per cent IDBI bond maturing in 2005 was traded for Rs200 million at a 13.69 per cent. The turnover in debentures at the NSE today was Rs5823.3 million. UNI
