Pivotals decline moderately on profit-taking; Nifty down ten points to 1041.20

Pivotals declined moderately at the National Stock Exchange following profit-taking selling pressure from local operators and institutional investors today.

Reflecting the weak trend, the S&P CNX Nifty index opened at 1056.85 points, touched the day's high of 1060.55 points, fell to the day's low of 1030.45 points before closing at 1041.20 points, showing a net loss of 10.65 points from the previous close of 1051.85 points.

The CNX Nifty Junior declined by 23.10 points to 1880.10 points from the previous close of 1903.20 points. S&P CNX Defty eased by 8.90 points from the previous close of 857.55 points.

The S&P CNX-500 and CNX Midcap-200 indices also closed lower by 10.63 and 11.78 points to 719.76 and 639.48 points as against the previous close of 730.39 and 651.26 points respectively.

Total turnover on the NSE reported during the day was Rs 23.62 billion which came from a trading of 92.64 million shares in 308,057 trades. The debentures traded were valued at Rs 6.34 million.

Today, 294 securities advanced, 777 declined, 87 remained unchanged while 112 securities hit their price bands.

ITC posted the highest turnover at Rs 3.35 billion followed by Pentafour Software Rs 3.17 billion, SBI New Rs 2.00 billion, Satyam Computers Rs 1.53 billion, Reliance Rs 1.43 billion and Zee Telefilms Rs 1.27 billion.

Other actively traded counters were Silverline (Rs 982.4 million), Tata Tea (Rs 749.1 million), Rolta (Rs 740 million), Telco (Rs 579.3 million), L&T (Rs 555.6 million), HCL-HP (Rs 489.5 million), NIIT (Rs 445.4 million), Infosys Technologies (Rs 434.8 million), Castrol (Rs 429.7 million), Hindustan Lever (Rs 417.2 million), Square D Software (Rs 273.4 million), Digital Equipment (Rs 257 million), Ranbaxy (Rs 253.3 million), Tisco (Rs 207.7 million), Himachal Futuristic (Rs 206.4 million), Glaxo (Rs 192.3 million), ACC (Rs 179 million), MTNL (Rs 168.2 million) and Global Telesystems (Rs 159.4 million).

The top five gainers were Bank of India which closed at Rs 23.90 (Rs 22.10), HDFC Bank Rs 60.35 (Rs 55.85), Orient Bank Rs 35.50 (Rs 33.70), SBI Rs 180 (Rs 171.85) and Grasim Rs 161.80 (Rs 158).

The top five losers were India Hotels which closed at Rs 335 (Rs 362.85), IPCL Rs 106.70 (Rs 115), Infosys Technologies Rs 3160 (Rs 3376.05), Arvind Mills Rs 32.10 (Rs 34) and NIIT Rs 2174 (Rs 2302.15).
