Nifty too affected by Kargil, loses 6.40 points

Equities slumped on selling pressure from institutional investors at the National Stock Exchange in Bombay today owing to the rising tension in Kargil.

The S&P CNX Nifty index opened at 1127.40, witnessed the day's high of 1143.30 and low of 1113.30, and ended at 1120.50, showing a net loss of 6.40 points from the previous close of 1126.90.

The S&P CNX Junior declined by 36 points to 1878 from the previous close of 1914.

The S&P CNX Defty ended lower by 8.40 points at 896.55.

The S&P CNX-500 and Midcap-200 closed lower by 8.45 and 9.65 points at 761.10 and 654.05 points, respectively.

The total turnover on the NSE was Rs 19.55 billion came from trading in 99.5 million shares in 287,731 trades. The value of debentures traded stood at Rs 5.98 million.

The exchange witnessed 359 securities advance, 610 decline and 68 remain unchanged. Thirty-three securities hit their price bands today.
