Prices drift lower as FIIs, bulls sell; Nifty steady 1156.65

Share prices drifted lower on selling pressure from foreign institutional investors and bull operators and ended with marginal losses at the National Stock Exchange today.

Mirroring the downtrend, the S&P CNX Nifty Junior fell by 12.25 points to 1953.20 points from 1965.45 points of the previous close and CNX Midcap 200 index eased by 0.09 points to 676.64 points.

However, the S&P CNX Nifty edged up by 1.60 points to 1156.65 points while the S&P CNX Defty inched up by 0.50 points to 932.60.

The S&P CNX 500 index edged up slightly by 0.45 points to 787.14 points from 786.69 points.

The total turnover, involving 76.96 million shares in 251,135 trades was Rs 15.93 billion and the debentures traded were valued at 4.77 million.

Today, 403 securities gained, 494 declined, 93 remained unchanged and 56 securities hit their price bands today.

The top S&P CNX Nifty gainers were: Reliance Petro which shot up by 8.01 per cent to Rs 23.60 from Rs 21.85, ABB 8 per cent to Rs 329.40 (305), Bank of India 7.18 per cent to Rs 22.40 (20.90), Tata Chemicals 7.17 per cent to Rs 71 (66.25) and Hindalco 6.50 per cent to Rs 605 (568.05).

The top losers were: Hero Honda which slid by 4.85 per cent to Rs 980 from Rs 1030, Cipla 3.18 per cent to Rs 1370, ICICI 2.90 per cent to Rs 75.25, M&M 2.55 per cent to Rs 229 and Ranbaxy 2.47 per cent to Rs 597.40.

Satyam Computers registered the highest turnover of Rs 1.74 billion, followed by Reliance 1.65 billion, ITC 1.52 billion, SBI Rs 1.42 billion, Pentafour Software Rs 1.29 billion, Ranbaxy Rs 1.04 billion, Tisco Rs 579 million, Tata Tea Rs 485 million, L&T Rs 480 million, Silverline Rs 445.4 million, MTNL Rs 441.6 million, Zee Telefilms Rs 437.5 million and Telco Rs 337.8 million.
