Select scrips surge, others dip; Nifty up 11 points, 966.20

Select scrips rallied up on good buying support while majority of the shares declined moderately on selling pressure on the National Stock Exchange today.

The S&P CNX Nifty Index advanced by 11.10 points to 966.20 points while the CNX Nifty Junior looked up by 4.90 points to 1692.50 points.

The S&P CNX Defty also moved up by 8.95 points to 787.70 points and the S&P CNX 500 index inched up by 3.26 points to 673.88 points. However, the CNX Midcap 200 index edged down by 0.60 points to 589.72 points.

The total turnover, involving 76.69 million shares in 267,558 trades, was Rs 20.92 billion. The debentures traded clocked Rs 5.96 million. Today, 453 securities gained, 598 declined while 106 remained unchanged. And 80 scrips have hit their price-bands today.

Top five S&P CNX Nifty gainers were: P&G and Smithkline Beecham which advanced by eight per cent each to Rs 877.05 and Rs 689.05 respectively. HDFC Bank improved by 7.82 per cent to Rs 60.70, Hindustan Lever moved up by 5.76 per cent to Rs 1941.80 and Infosys Technologies gained by 4.73 per cent to Rs 4715.

The top losers were Colgate which lost by 6.42 per cent to Rs 176.50, followed by IPCL 4.4 per cent to Rs 71.70, Hero Honda 3.75 per cent to Rs 590, Great Eastern Shipping 3.33 per cent to Rs 21.80 and Tata Power 2.82 per cent to Rs 86.30.

Pentafour Software topped the turnover list with Rs 4.28 billion, followed by Satyam Computers Rs 3.85 billion, ITC Rs 1.49 billion, Hindustan Lever Rs 949.9 million, HCL-HP Rs 706.1 million, Telco Rs 696.6 million, Tata Tea Rs 666.5 million, Silverline Rs 645.7 million, Castrol Rs 579.5 million, Zee Telefilms Rs 506.5 million, Reliance Rs 476.7 million, SBI New Rs 448.7 million and Rolta Rs 352.9 million.

The other actively traded securities were: Square D Software Rs 338.7 million, Infosys Technologies Rs 263.4 million, ACC Rs 250.8 million, Tisco Rs 250 million, MTNL Rs 232.9 million, Dabur Rs 220 million, NIIT Rs 217 million, Digital Equipment Rs 165 million and L&T Rs 156 million.

The wholesale debt market of the NSE witnessed trades worth Rs 5.23 million. The 11.40 per cent government loan maturing in 2000 was traded for Rs 800 million at a weighted yield of 11.21 per cent. The 11.55 per cent government loan maturing in 2001 was traded for Rs 500 million at a weighted yield of 11.41 per cent. The 12.25 per cent government loan maturing in 2008 was traded for Rs 800 million at a weighted yield of 12.23 per cent.

The commercial paper of Reliance Industries Limited maturing on March 8, 1999 was traded for Rs 100 million at a yield of 9.90 per cent. The turnover in debentures was Rs 138 million.
