Tuesday blues return as Nifty dips 21 points to 924.10

Equities slumped on selling pressure by domestic operators who, as is their wont, squared their open positions on the last day (Tuesday) of the current trading cycle at the National Stock Exchange today.

The S&P CNX Nifty Index opened at 944.15, touched the day's high of 948, low of 923.20 before closing at 924.10, showing a net loss of 20.80 points as against the previous close of 944.90.

The CNX Nifty Junior also ended lower by 28.40 points at 1620.50, while the CNX Defty fell by 17.35 points to 753.20 at the fag end.

The S&P CNX-500 and CNX Midcap-200 eased by 13.47 and 9.14 points to end at 642.39 and 570.37.

Today, 306 scrips advanced, 748 declined and 93 remained unchanged on the NSE while 62 securities hit their price bands today.

The total turnover on the NSE was Rs 24.55 billion from trading in 85.6 million shares in 280,092 trades. The debentures traded were valued at Rs 5.81 million.

The wholesale debt market of the NSE witnessed trades worth Rs 3.53 billion. The 11.40 per cent government loan maturing in 2000 was traded for Rrs 750 million at a weighted yield of 11.26 per cent.

The 13.65 per cent government loan maturing in February 1999 was traded for Rs 750 million at a weighted yield of 8.79 per cent. The zero coupon government bond maturing in 2000 (series II) was traded for Rs 200 million at a weighted yield of 11.18 per cent. The 13.75 per cent non-convertible debentures of Citicorp Finance India Limited maturing in 2001 were traded for Rs 30 million at a weighted yield of 13.23 per cent. A repo trade was transacted for Rs 250 million at 9.50 per cent for a repo term of 11 days.
