All but telecom stocks dip; Sensex sheds 41 points, 3236.42

Barring telecom stocks, share prices reacted sharply at the Bombay Stock Exchange on lack of institutional buying interest today.

Punjab Wireless, Shyam Telecom registered a gain of about eight per cent respectively while software giants Pentafour Software, NIIT, Aptech, Infosys Technologies declined moderately. The pharma stocks witnessed a mixed trend, dealers said.

Reflecting the weak trend, the 30-scrip BSE Sensex opened on a firm note at 3291.47. Surpassing the psychological barrier of 3300 points, it touched the day's high of 3301.54 points. However, it later fell to the day's low of 3223.24 towards the fag end of session on heavy selling pressure from foreign funds.

The Sensex finally closed at 3236.42 points, showing a net loss of 41.15 points over the previous close of 3277.57 points.

The broad-based BSE-100 index declined by 18.92 points to 1423.29 points as against the previous close of 1442.21 points.

The BSE-200 and Dollex indices eased by 3.99 and 1.50 points to 329.97 and 129.39 points as against the previous close of 333.96 and 130.89 points respectively.

Withdrawal of support by Sikkim Democratic Front to the BJP-led coalition government at the Centre caused worry to the marketmen.

Total turnover on the BSE witnessed during the day was Rs 13.19 billion. Pentafour Software topped the list of turnover by registering highest turnover of Rs 2.11 billion, followed by ITC Rs 1.42 billion and Tata Tea Rs 791 million.

Other actively traded counters were Satyam Computers (Rs 742.4 million), Digital Equipment (Rs 662.3 million), MTNL (Rs 412.7 million), Tisco (Rs 367.2 million), Reliance (Rs 346.2 million), Dr Reddy's (Rs 308.5 million) Zee Telefilms (Rs 259 million), Castrol (Rs 234.4 million), Dabur India (Rs 169.8 million) and Ranbaxy (Rs 154.7 million).
