Fresh buying leads to marginal gains; Nifty up 5.5 points to 1315.30

Pivotals recovered their initial loses and closed marginally higher on fresh buying support by market players on the opening day of the current settlement at the National Stock Exchange today.

Reflecting the uptrend, the S&P CNX Nifty opened lower at 1308.75 points, rose to the high of 1328.20 points and slid to the low of 1295.20 points, before closing at 1315.30 points, gaining 5.55 points over its previous day's close of 1309.75.

The CNX Nifty Junior also improved by 25.05 points to 2354.55 points from 2329.50 points and the S&P CNX Defty edged up by 3.70 points to 1048.75 points.

The S&P CNX 500 index appreciated by 5.80 points to 922.55 points and CNX Midcap 200 rose by 9.80 points to 823.25 points.

The NSE witnessed a total turnover of Rs 27.18 billion, involving 102.68 million shares in 382,302 trades. The turnover in debentures stood at Rs 4.25 million.

Today, 775 securities advanced, 305 declined, 53 remained unchanged while 171 securities hit their price bands today.

The top S&P CNX Nifty gainers were Indian Rayon which shot up by 8.05 per cent to Rs 71.10 from Rs 65.80, Dr Reddy's 6.54 per cent to Rs 1117.45 (1048.90), BSES Rs 5.19 per cent to Rs 175.45 (166.80), Infosys Technologies 4.90 per cent to Rs 5281.25 (5034.60) and Tisco 4.59 per cent Rs 143.55 (137.25).

The top losers were Hero Honda which eased by 3.01 per cent to Rs 1248.60 from Rs 1287.30, TVS Suzuki 2.61 per cent to Rs 770.80 (791.45), BHEL 2.52 per cent to Rs 282.45 (289.75), ICICI 2.47 per cent to Rs 82.95 (85.05) and ABB 2.33 per cent to Rs 413.75 (423.60).
