Nifty steady amidst political uncertainty, 982

Political uncertainty at the Centre continued to dampen market sentiments at the National Stock Exchange as equities fluctuated in a narrow range on speculative selling spree coupled with lack of buying support from institutional investors today.

Reflecting the dull trend, the S&P CNX Nifty index opened at 987.05 points, touched the day's high of 994.30 points, fell to the day's low of 968.15 points before closing at 982.00 points showing a small gain of 0.35 points from the previous close of 981.65 points. The CNX Nifty Junior declined by 17.15 points to 1789.30 points from the previous close of 1806.45 points.

S&P CNX Defty ended marginally lower by 1.25 points to 794.50 points as against the previous close of 795.75 points.

S&P CNX-500 and CNX-Midcap-200 eased by 1.75 and 3.94 points to 678.81 and 609.22 points from the previous close of 680.56 and 613.16 points respectively.

Total turnover on the NSE reported during the day was Rs 17.93 billion, came from a trading of 54.67 million shares. Debentures traded were valued at Rs 1.49 million.

Today, 300 securities advanced, 581 declined, 83 remained unchanged while 26 securities hit their price bands.

Pentafour Software registered the highest turnover of Rs 2.97 billion, followed by Satyam Computers Rs 2.51 billion, ITC Rs 1.75 billion, Ranbaxy Rs 1.23 billion and Silverline Rs 871 million.

Other actively traded counters were Zee Telefilms (Rs 869.4 million), Reliance (Rs 732.3 million), BPL (Rs 571.7 million), ACC (Rs 537.5 million), Rolta (Rs 471.6 million), SBI (Rs 452.6 million), Digital Equipment (Rs 434.3 million), HCL Hp (Rs 427.6 million), MTNL (Rs 361.1 million), Square D Software (Rs 290.8 million), Global Telesystems (Rs 258.3 million), Tata Tea (Rs 209.1 million), L&T (Rs 187.7 million), Hindustan Lever (Rs 173.8 million), Infosys Technologies (Rs 163.8 million), Castrol (Rs 127.1 million), Cadbury (Rs 111.4 million), Glaxo (Rs 106.3 million) and Wockhardt (Rs 86.1 million).

The gainers were Hero Honda at Rs 882 (Rs 849), Smithklbech Rs 620 (Rs 600), P&G Rs 885 (Rs 860.50), India Hotel Rs 298 (Rs 291) and IDBI Rs 27.50 (Rs 27).

The losers were ABB Rs 304.25 (Rs 322.50), Hindustan Petroleum Rs 140.70 (Rs 148), Indian Rayon Rs 62.50 (Rs 65.40), Cipla Rs 1,450 (1,500) and Glaxo Rs 706 (Rs 727.75).
