Maharashtra to review taxes on automobile industry

The Maharashtra government has assured the automobile industry that its concerns over the enhancement of sales tax and turnover tax will be addressed.

The government advised the industry to make cars which are cheaper, environment-friendly and smaller in size to match India's roads.

Addressing the regional auto show in Bombay, Maharashtra's transport minister Gajanan Kirtikar said the state has undertaken to reach 200,000 kilometres of roads, besides asphalting and cement concreting of existing roads.

Anand Mahindra, chairman of Mahindra and Mahindra, said the auto show has attracted 30,000 people, generated 11,700 enquiries and business worth Rs 65 million. The show would be an annual event, he said.

He requested the government improve the infrastructure and also provide the facilities for holding auto shows.
