New Bombay airport project plan gains momentumThe City and Industrial Development Corporation has proposed to develop a state-of-art domestic airport in New Bombay to meet the ever-increasing air travel demand in the domestic sector. The proposed Panvel location is technically and economically feasible for the domestic airport, according to a study by consultants RITES and Carter and Burgess Industries of the United States respectively. Moreover, the land is in CIDCO's possession and therefore there is no resettlement and rehabilitation issue involved for the proposed development. This feasibility report was submitted by the state government to the civil aviation ministry for consideration. The proposal was also presented to the committee appointed by the aviation ministry for the second airport in Bombay. The committee had deputed a technical team consisting of executive director (operations) and deputy general manager to assess the site feasibility of the airport. The team visited the site on Tuesday and held discussions with the officials of the state government, CIDCO and the public representatives. UNI
