Pune special session pushes Nifty down five points; 824.00
Equities declined further at the National Stock Exchange following selling pressure from domestic and foreign institutional investors during the specially conducted live trading session today. This was the first time the NSE has conducted a normal trading on Saturday in the capital market segment. Trading began at 10.30 am and ended at 12.30 pm from its back-up site in Pune. Reflecting the trend, the S&P CNX Nifty Index opened at 828.25 points, touched the day's high of 828.25 points, fell to the day's low of 819.85 points before closing at 824 points, showing a net loss of 4.85 points against the previous close of 828.85 points. CNX Nifty Junior Index declined by 3.45 points to 1419.75 points from the previous close of 1423.20 points. S&P CNX Defty closed lower by 3.95 points to 674.55 points from the Friday's close of 678.50 points. The S&P CNX-500 and CNX Midcap-200 ended lower by 1.41 and 0.44 points to 569.19 and 510.44 points from the previous close of 570.60 and 510.88 points respectively. Total volume of business stood at Rs 3.65 billione from 18.33 million shares in 57,555 trades. The debentures traded value was Rs 1 million. About 235 scrips advanced, 354 declined and 60 remain unchanged, an NSE release said. ITC topped the list of turnover by registering the highest turnover of Rs 838.4 million, followed by SBI Rs 460.3 million, Satyam Computers Rs 370.2 million, Castrol Rs 240.6 million and Reliance Rs 195.1 million. Other actively traded counters were Pentafour Software (Rs 172.5 million), Tata Tea (Rs 127.5 million), Telco (Rs 123.1 million), Zee Telefilms (Rs 110.7 million), Tisco (Rs 73.3 million), Nestle (Rs 69.5 million), MTNL (Rs 61.1 million), ACC (Rs 59.6 million), SquareDSoftware (Rs 55.9 million), Mastek (Rs 51.6 million), Digital Equipment (Rs 48.3 million), Bata India (Rs 43.4 million), G E Shipping (Rs 41.5 million), Indal (Rs 36.4 million), L&T (Rs 36.3 million), BHEL Rs 34 million), HCL-HP (Rs 33.1 million), Cummins (Rs 31.3 million), Sterlite (Rs 22.9 million), Infosys Technologies (Rs 18 million). Among the gainers, Nestle closed at Rs 417.10 (410.40), Orient Bank Rs 39.95 (Rs 39.45), Tisco Rs 82 (Rs 81.50), P&G Rs 759.70 (Rs 755.45), Indian Rayon Rs 102.50 (Rs 102). The losers included BHEL Rs 232.35 (Rs 239), Arvind Mill Rs 30.25 (Rs 31), M&M Rs 146.60 (Rs 149.30), East India Hotel Rs 234.65 (Rs 238.65) and India Hotel Rs 404.10 (Rs 411).
