Three sites shortlisted for international airport project in Hyderabad

Three sites have been identified near Hyderabad for setting up an international airport, Andhra Pradesh minister for roads and buildings B Gopala Krishna Reddy said on Thursday.

He said that the Airports Authority of India has sought time till December this year to finalise the site. The development of the proposed airport would be undertaken by private parties, who were expected to pay royalties to the government after the airport became operational.

The three sites identified are Shamshabad, Bhonguluru and Nadurgul, which are situated about 20 km from Hyderabad.

Once the site was finalised, the land acquisition process would begin followed by preparation of detailed project report and tendering process.

Officials said about 1,400 hectares of land would be required for the development of the airport, and if an export zone and township were to be developed along with the airport, the land requirement would be more than 3,000 hectares.

In terms of money, more than Rs 12 billion would be required for the construction of the airport alone.

A proposal to build an international airport in Bangalore by a Tatas-led consortium has been hanging fire for the last two years. If the proposed Hyderabad project materialises, it would be the second time that AP would overtake Karnataka in bagging major ventures. Hyderabad was recently chosen for locating the Indian School of Business amid stiff competition from Bangalore.
