Deep drilling for platinum unearths copper and nickle deposits in ShimogaGeologist Dr T C Devaraju said drilling upto 252 metres has been carried out to find the presence of platinum group of metals in Magyathalli, 15 km south of Channagiri, in Shimoga district of Karnataka. He said the research project was started in collaboration with the Institute of Geo Science and Astronomy, University of Oulu in Finland, Karnataka State Mines and Geology Department and Karnataka University. He said it was found that the place was rich in copper and nickle. The research was taken up in two other places near the village recently and the results so far were very encouraging. He said the research was aimed at identifiying the potential existence of six platinum group of metals such as osmium, iridium, ruthenum, rhodium, platinum and palladium. Devaraju said the minerological work was done in Canada and Finland using the latest techniques and methods. He said the Finnish Academy had sanctioned Rs 7 million for continuing the investigation for another three years from January next. UNI |
