Treat chillies, onions as essentials, AP urges Centre

Email this report to a friend

The Andhra Pradesh government has suggested to the Centre to bring chillies and onions under the purview of the Essential Commodities Act so that necessary control could be exercised over the traders.

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, who reviewed the prices of essential commodities particularly that of onions, chillies, vegetables, rice and edible oil with the state civil supplies officials on Saturday in Hyderabad, directed the officers to procure 30,000 bags (3000 quintals) of dry chillies from Guntur and other places for distribution through the public distribution system outlets throughout the state.

The chief minister directed the officials to submit the indents of chillies to the Guntur Collector for immediate despatch and distribution within three days.

Naidu also decided that the chilli exporters of the state who had firm export orders should inform Guntur district or other chilli producing districts' officials so that the government could tackle the situation effectively.
