Week ends on a low note as pivotals keep steady; Sensex down 33 points, 2976.12

The Sensex of the Bombay Stock Exchange declined by about 33 points, despite the pharma scrips doing well on hectic buying support from speculators and institutional investors at the last day of the current settlement today.

According to leading BSE brokers, pharma scrips like Burroughs Welcome and Glaxo were at the forefront while others like vehicle major Telco also posted smart gains on heavy buying support.

However, the pivotals did not witness much movement in the mixed market, another broker said.

Most market players were busy squaring up their positions on account of end of the weekly cycle. The possible threat from a comet on November 18 to satellite users predicted by the Indian Space Research Organisation also forced stockbrokers to minimise their long-term position to avoid panic situation.

Mirroring the trend, the BSE-30 Sensitive Index opened at 2976.28, touched the day's high 3019.00, fell to the day's low of 2973.49, before closing at 2976.12 points, showing a net loss of 33.45 points from the previous close of 3009.57 points.

The broadbased BSE-100 index drifted lower by 12.75 points to 1325.53 points as against the previous close of 1338.28 points.

Among the gainers, Burroughs Welcome rose by Rs 21.25 to Rs 577.00, Glaxo Rs 44 to Rs 574.

The losers include BHEL down by Rs 1.80 to Rs 265.30, Cadbury Rs 7.25 to Rs 377.50, Castrol Rs 4.50 to Rs 643.75, Dr Reddy's Rs 2.25 to Rs 447.25, Grasim Rs 4 to Rs 160.70, Hindustan Lever Rs 7.50 to Rs 1619.75, ICICI Rs 1.55 to Rs 51.50, Infosyts Technologies Rs 17 to Rs 2392.50, ITC Rs 10.25 to Rs 728.75, Mahindra Rs 2.90 to Rs 164.50, NIIT Rs 3 to Rs 1331.25, Pentafour Software Rs 3.25 to Rs 584.00, Reliance Rs 5.20 to Rs 121.60, Satyam Computers Rs 4.25 to Rs 586.25, SBI Rs 3.60 to Rs 161.40, Telco Rs 0.50 to Rs 140 and Tata Power Rs 2.20 to Rs 89.80.

Meanwhile, the BSE-200 and Dollex indices eased by 2.50 and 0.95 points to 305.78 and 120.30 points from the previous close of 308.28 and 121.25 points respectively.

Total turnover on the BSE rose to Rs 11.71 billion. The petrochem major Reliance topped the list of turnover by registering highest turnover of Rs 1.63 billion, followed by ITC Rs 1.60 billion, Pentafour Software Rs 996.6 million, SBI Rs 875.2 million and Zee Telefilms Rs 708.2 million.

Other actively traded scrips were Telco (Rs 485 million), Glaxo India (Rs 434.6 million), Tata Tea (Rs 431.3 million), Tisco (Rs 282.3 million), MTNL (Rs 258.9 million), Dr Reddy's (Rs 238 million), Castrol (Rs 186.7 million), L&T (Rs 183.6 million), Hindalco (Rs 141.7 million).
