Prices plummet after initial gains; Nifty 823.20

Share prices which opened on a positive note, drifted lower marginally towards close, on selling pressure by bull operators on the National Stock Exchange today.

Reflecting the subdued trend, the S&P CNX Nifty index declined by 0.80 points to 823.20 points from 824 points of the previous day.

The CNX Nifty Junior index slid by 9.05 points to 1410.70 points from 1419.75 points and S&P CNX Defty moved down by 0.20 points to 674.35 points from 674.55 points. The S&P CNX 500 was lower by 3.02 points to 566.17 points while CNX Midcap 200 index lost 4.42 points to 506.02 points.

The total turnover, involving 48.53 million shares in 157,042 trades was Rs 12.06 billion. The debenture traded value was Rs 3.91 million.

About 326 securities advanced, 608 declined and 78 remained unchanged. About 40 securites hit their price bands today. The net investment of foreign institutional investors was Rs 297.5 million while the net sales by domestic institutions were Rs 44.2 million.

G E Shipping topped the gainers list with 2.43 per cent rise to Rs 21.05, followed by ITC 1.47 per cent to Rs 706.30, Gujarat Ambuja Cement 1.29 per cent to Rs 200.50, Glaxo 1.01 per cent to Rs 475.50 and Arvind Mills 0.99 per cent to Rs 30.65.

IDBI suffered the highest loss of 6.68 per cent to Rs 36.35. ABB declined by 2.80 per cent to Rs 463, SBIN 2.23 per cent to Rs 151.25, TVS Suzuki 2.17 per cent to Rs 590.65 and HDFC Bank 1.90 per cent to Rs 51.75.

Tobacco giant ITC registered the highest turnover of Rs 2.98 billion. The other actively traded counters were Satyam Computers (Rs 1.65 billion), Castrol (Rs 1.07 billion), SBI New (Rs 1.03 billion), Zee Telefilms (Rs 821.7 million), Reliance (Rs 805.6 million), Pentafour Software (Rs 589.6 million), MTNL (Rs 216.4 million), Tata Tea (Rs 198.4 million), ACC (Rs 177.9 million), Digital Equipment (Rs 164.8 million), HCL-HP (Rs 158.7 million), Telco (Rs 157.6 million), Infosys Tech (Rs 146.2 million), Hindustan Lever (Rs 134.3 million), Tisco (Rs 105.2 million), Gujarat Ambuja Cement (Rs 101.7 million) and L&T (Rs 99.5 million).
