Task force submits interim report

Send this story to a friend The special task force, headed by Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, to recommend measures enabling states to raise more resources has submitted its first interim report to Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha.

The recommendations arrived at by the task force were forwarded to Sinha in the form of a first report yesterday. Meanwhile, the Union government has extended the duration of the task force to July 31, 1998.

The task force proposes to hold more detailed discussions on the entire gamut of issues relating to devolution of financial powers to the states in its coming meeting. Representatives of the state governments, which have not been able to participate so far, will be asked to present their points of view on the subject.

The task force also proposes to hold a meeting with economists, planners, academicians, public representatives and officials before coming up with the next set of recommendations.

The task force, which was set up to examine and recommend measures to enable the states to raise more resources by additional or alternative means and also suggest devolution of additional financial powers to the states, held its fourth meeting here yesterday.
