Television channels with 20 per cent foreign equity may get uplinking facilities

The Bharatiya Janata Party-led coalition government has indicated that it was prepared to give uplinking facilities to satellite television channels with a foreign equity of upto 20 per cent.

However, a meeting of Indian-owned satellite television operators was told that this decision was subject to the Union Cabinet's approval.

The government viewpoint was conveyed at the meeting by Information and Broadcasting Secretary P G Mankad which was attended by representatives of several television networks including Asianet, TV International, Sun TV and Eenadu TV.

The representatives also apprised the secretary and other officials present of the difficulties encountered in getting clearances from the Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited, and stressed upon the need to draw up guidelines for uplinking facilities.
