Sensex ends 41.17 points lower after dipping 123 points

The market witnessed wild fluctuations due to alternate bouts of buying and selling by speculators. The foreign institutional investors and domestic institutional investors did not participate actively in the market, leading BSE brokers said.

Marketmen were busy squaring their positions in view of last day of trading settlement on the National Stock Exchange.

Reflecting the volatilite mood, the Sensex opened at 3047.49 points, fell below the psychological barrier of 3000 mark to touch day's low of 2954.86 by registering an intraday loss of 123.65 points, and recovered partially to close at 3037.34 points, finally showing a net loss of 41.17 points against the previous close of 3078.51 points.

According to a leading BSE broker, the market participants were also waiting for some favourable announcements from the Securities and Exchange Board of India after its meeting to discuss the volatility in the markets along with other related issues.

The broadbased BSE-100 index drifted lower by 14.25 points to 1326.89 points against the previous close of 1341.13 points. The BSE-200 and Dollex indices were closed lower by 3.62 and 2.04 points to 302.49 and 117.34 points against the previous close of 306.11 and 119.38 points respectively.

Among the losers, ACC declined by Rs 39 to Rs 1130, Hind Lever down by Rs 10.50 to Rs 1419.75, ITC lowered by Rs 2 to Rs 628, Reliance moved down by Rs 2.10 to Rs 139.80 and Tisco dropped by Rs 1.50 to Rs 120.80 and Larsen and Toubro eased by Rs 1.50 to Rs 215.

Among the gainers, Bajaj Auto registered an increase of Rs 11 to Rs 528, Hindalco gained by Rs 10.50 to Rs 629.50, State Bank gained smartly by Rs 5.10 to Rs 204.10 while Telco improved by Rs 1.10 to Rs 169.20.

The business volume improved marginally to Rs 6.62 billion from Rs 5.5 bllion recorded yesterday.

ITC displayed the highest turnover of Rs 1.7 billion, followed by Satyam Computer Rs 1 billion, Reliance Rs 618 million, State Bank of India Rs 579.5 million and Hind Lever Rs 240.9 million.

Hectic activity was witnessed at the other counters like Zee Telefilm (Rs 240.5 million), Castrol Ind (Rs 213.1 million), Pentafour (Rs 168.9 million), Infosys Tech (Rs 141.7 million), Tisco (Rs 100.3 million), MTNL (Rs 95.5 million), BHEL (Rs 95.2 million), L&T (Rs 82.8 million), Tata Tea (Rs 82.1 million) and ACC (Rs 80.1 million).
