NSE-50 Index

Nifty falls 33.5 points

Equities crashed sharply on the National Stock Exchange following heavy selling pressure by foreign funds and speculators as the market continued the depressed trend for the fifth consecutive day today.

Reflecting the bearish phase, the NSE-50 (Nifty) index opened at 1026.60 (day's high), touched the day's low of 989.20 and finally ended at 993.50 points, registering a net loss of Rs 33.50 points against the previous close of 1027.00 points.

The Dollar NSE-50 (Defty) lost by 28.10 points to 823.60 against the previous close of 851.70 points.

The Midcap nosedived by 101.90 points to 1413.85 points against the previous close of 1515.75 points.

Around 133 securities advanced and 869 declined with 64 held steady. Further 133 securities hit their price bands today, a NSE release said.

The volume of the business advanced smartly by Rs 4.39 billion to Rs 20.76 billion against yesterday's turnover of Rs 16.37 billion. Around 80.8million shares changed hands in 236,379 trades.

Tobacco giant ITC continued at the top and registered highest turnover of Rs 436.16 million, followed by Satyam Comp Rs 3.3 billion, State Bank Rs 1.3 billion, pentsfware S Rs 1.3 billion and Reliance Rs 1.3 billion.

Other top traded securities were BPL (Rs 1.1 billion), Zee Telefilm (Rs 778,4 million), Tisco (Rs 585.1 million), BFL Software (Rs 568.4 million), Telco (Rs 496.1 million), Tata Tea (Rs 466 million), ACC (Rs 365 million), ICICI (Rs 346.2 million), Hind Lever (Rs 298.5 million), L&T (Rs 297.1 million), Videocon (Rs 289.5 million), Castrol (Rs 285.7 million), Infosys Tech (Rs 232.1 million), Silverline (Rs 211.4 million), Sterlite (Rs 181.6 million), BHEL (Rs 134.7 million), MTNL (Rs 102.1 million), Bajaj Auto (Rs 102.1 million), Corp Bank (Rs 97.8 million) and Wipro (Rs 94..4 million).

The top five nifty gainers were Ranbaxy Rs 582.90 (559.95), Hind Petro Rs 382.00 (380.05).

The top five Nifty losers were Orient Bank Rs 52.55 ( 58.35), Arvind Mills Rs 54.45 (60.25), IndoGulf Rs 34.25 (37.85), Ashok Leyland Rs 42.00 (46.25) and Tata Chem Rs 132.65 (145.60).
