Vajpayee assures American business of pursuing liberalisation

The government is committed to the liberalisation programme which has opened up a very wide scope for investment by foreign and domestic investors, Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee said on Tuesday.

Addressing a delegation of the American Business Council in New Delhi, Vajpayee said the government's only concern while pursuing the liberalisation programme was protecting the interests of the common man.

Leader of the ABC delegation Jim Reinsch, vice-chairman and managing director of Bechtel India Limited, said the Council was engaged in facilitating investments by US companies in India.

Stressing that the Council looked upon India as a very important business partner, Reinsch offered its support in furthering the economic co-operation between the US and India.

The ABC represents more than 250 US companies. The delegation expressed its appreciation for the manner in which the government had swiftly acted on the recommendations of the task force on information technology, particularly on the scaling down of duties on information technology software.

The delegation included Mark Mileusnic, managing director of Chubb group, Ashok Sapra, president, AT&T India, Pramod Bhasin, president, GE Capital Services, R C Bajpai, executive director, ABC among others.
