IMC urges postal staff, government to kiss and make up

The Indian Merchants Chamber has called upon the 550,000 striking postal employees to end their six-day-long agitation, so as to create a cool and congenial climate for negotiations and arrive at an amicable settlement.

IMC President Y P Trivedi also urged the government not to allow the issue to fester, but to play a proactive role for ending the strike expeditiously in a fair and just manner, particularly when the economy is experiencing a slowdown.

Calling for restraint on both sides, he said a nation can become great not only by exploding a nuclear device, but fostering self-imposed discipline of its people.

He pointed out that the strike has delayed clearance of intercity cheques, drafts, share certificates, pensions and other documents amounting to billions of rupees, causing untold hardship to people at large.

The government is losing about Rs 200 million in postal revenue every day, he said.
