NSE takes a tumbleThe tremors felt in the Bombay Stock Exchange had a major impact on market sentiments at the National Stock Exchange. The NSE-50 index opened slightly lower at 1,033.55 points as against the previous close of 1,033.55 points. It witnessed a high of 1,033.20 points and a low of 992.50 before closing at 995.80, showing a net loss of 37.75 points. The dollar NSE-50 (defty) drifted lower by 34.60 points to end at 866.45 as compared to the previous close of 901.05 points. The midcap index closed at 1,129 points from the last closing of 1,171.45, showing a loss of 42.45 points. The total value of stocks traded was Rs 13.97 billion and the traded quantity 5.65 billion. ITC recorded the highest turnover of Rs 5.40 billion followed by Tata Tea (Rs 1.67 billion), SBI (Rs 1.36 billion), Reliance (Rs 1.32 billion), Castrol (Rs 529.9 million) and Hind Lever (Rs 397.2 million). Hectic trading was witnessed at other counters like Tisco (Rs 383.9 million), MTNL (Rs 368.2 million), L&T (Rs 307.9 million), ACC (239.9 million), Telco (Rs 209.3 million), Corp Bank (Rs 189.3 million), BHEL (Rs 113.2 million), BPL (Rs 109.5 million), Colgate (R 99.1 million), ICICI (Rs 77.4 million), Bajaj Auto (Rs 75.9 million), Ingerrand (Rs 49.4 million), Ranbaxy (Rs 45.6 million), Rel Petro (Rs 39.9 million), IPCL (Rs 38.1 million), Rel Cap (Rs 35.5 million), BSES (Rs 34.8 million) and LML (Rs 31 million). The top gainer was TVS Suzuki which went up by 0.83 per cent to Rs 420.55. The losers included Thermax (which fell by 9.55 per cent to 163.90), MTNL (by 8.76 per cent to Rs 214.50), Hindalco (by 8.51 per cent to Rs 634.10), Gujambuja (by 6.89 per cent to Rs 255.60) and Rel Capital (by 6.61 per cent to Rs 58.60).
