NSE up by 15 pointsPivotals gained smartly at the National Stock Exchange on Monday. Reflecting an uptrend, the NSE-50 index opened at 994.10 points, touched the day's high of 1011.70, fell to the low of 994.10 points and later ended at 1,009.60 points, showing a net gain of 15.95 points over the previous day's 993.65. The NSE-50 index closed higher by 8.10 points to 892.35 as against the previous 884.25 points, while the Midcap registered a gain of 21.30 points to 1,127.30 against the previous close of 1,106.00 points. The total turnover on the NSE during the day was Rs 9.02 billion. ITC topped the list of turnover by registering Rs 2.10 billion, followed by Hind Lever (Rs 1.08 billion), Tata Tea (Rs 775.6 million), State Bank of India (Rs 687.9 million) and Ranbaxy (Rs 668.3 million). Hectic activity was also witnessed in other counters like Reliance (Rs 534.3 million), Castrol (Rs 402.3 million), MTNL (Rs 287.8 million), Bajaj Auto (Rs 171.5 million), Telco (Rs 170.6 million), LML (Rs 162.2 million), L and T (Rs 150.7 million) Corp Bank (Rs 150 million), Nestle (Rs 125.9 million), ACC (Rs 122.7 million), HDFC (Rs 102.8 million), BSES (Rs 85.2 million), BHEL (Rs 82.3 million), Glaxo (Rs 76.1 million), Tisco (Rs 71.6 million), Pentsware (Rs 62.7 million), Infosys Tech (Rs 62.3 million), Punjab Tract (Rs 61.9 million), HPCL (Rs 39.1 million) and BPCL (Rs 32.5 million). HDFC, IFCI, HDFC Bank, Cochin Refin and Tata Power emerged as top gainers while Thermax, Bajaj Auto, Tata Chem, Orient Bank and Asian Paints were the main losers. Meanwhile, the wholesale debt market witnessed trades worth Rs 1.88 billion. The 12.50 per cent government loan maturing in 2004 was traded for Rs 50 million at a yield of 12.12 per cent. The 10.85 per cent govt loan maturing in 2001 was traded for Rs 50 million at a yield of 12.194 per cent. The 364 days treasury bill maturing on April 24, 1998 was traded for Rs 320 million at a weighted average yield of 12.94 per cent. UNI |
