Sensex gains 0.98 point

A mixed trend was witnessed on the country premier Bombay Stock Exchange today as the Sensex improved by one point on renewed buying support from company circles and domestic institutions.

The market players foreign institutional investors sold 1.5 million of Reliance Industries Limited shares, whereas domestic institutions namely Unit Trust of India and company circles bought sizeable amount of heavy-weighted shares, which kept the equity prices stable.

The decision of ING Barings to shut down its South Asian operations hit market sentiments. The FIIs also sold MTNL and Hindustan Lever which affected the market sentiment and led to lacklustre trading session.

The BSE Sensitive index opened marginally lower at 3289.45 points moved higher to reach a level of 3299.50 points, touched day's low of 3261.38 points and finally, settled at 3293.89 points showing a net gain of 0.98 points as compared to the yesterday's close of 3292.91 points.

The broadbased BSE national index firmed by 1.04 points as against its previous close of 1419.25 points.

The BSE-200 and Dollex indices closed at 316.04 and 135.61 respectively as compared to yesterday's close of 315.94 and 135.60.

Total turnover was Rs 7.1 billion, involving 26 million shares. Out of 6,915 scrips, a total number of 1,528 scrips were traded.

ITC registered the highest turnover of Rs 1.7 billion, followed by Tata Tea Rs 845.5 million, Castrol Rs 789.4 million, Hind Lever Rs 723.1 million, Reliance Rs 641.6 million, Bajaj Auto Rs 213 million, Ponds Rs 175.9 million, TELCO Rs 112.8 million, MTNL Rs 108.9 million, ACC Rs 77.5 million, Bharat Petro Rs 71.1 million, L and T Rs 53.2 million, Lakme Rs 52.9 million and TISCO Rs 50.1 million in the specified counters.

Good transaction were observed at Hind Lever (Rs 31.6 million), Corporation Bank (Rs 29.9 million), LML (Rs 25.7 million), NIIT (Rs 22.2 million), Satyam Comp(Rs 11.8 million), BF Softwr (Rs 11.2 million) and Nicholas Pir (Rs 10.4 million) in B1 counters.
