Infotech surge spurs major rally; Sensex up 98 points, 2973.37

BSE Sensitive Index The Bombay Stock Exchange Sensex registered remarkable recovery of 98 points as the pivotals mainly from the software group reported handsome gains today, following the United States' decision to suspend missile strikes against Iraq.

The possibility on passage of the patent bill in the current Parliament session has also boosted sentiments on the BSE on the first day of current settlement today.

The foreign institutional investors made heavy buying in the scrips like Pentafour Software, Zee Telefilms, Telco, Castrol, Dr Reddy's, Cadbury's and Tata Electric.

Reflecting the bullish phase, the 30-scrip BSE Sensex opened at 2921.27 points, touched the day's high of 2977.03 points, fell to the day's low of 2921.27 points, before closing at 2973.37 points, showing a net gain of 98.28 points from Friday's close of 2875.09 points.

The broad-based BSE-100 index gained by 43.33 points to 1316.50 points from the previous close of 1273.17 points.

There was complete bullish trend as most of the counters reported gains over their previous close.

Among the issues, Bajaj Auto jumped up by Rs 20 to Rs 525, BHEL Rs 9.80 to Rs 237, BSES 0.60 paise to Rs 139.70, Burrough Welcome Rs 9.25 to Rs 597, Cadbury Rs 34.75 to Rs 469.50, Castrol Rs 31.35 to Rs 700, Colgate Rs 6.80 to Rs 185.80, Dr Reddy's Rs 31.75 to Rs 482.25, Glaxo Rs 10.75 to Rs 614, Grasim Rs 7.10 to Rs 170.50.

Other gainers were: Hero Honda earned Rs 13.25 to Rs 572.50, Hindustan Lever Rs 4 to Rs 503.50, Indian Hotel Rs 8.50 to Rs 814, Indian Rayon Rs 2.20 to Rs 104.60, ITC Rs 23.75 to Rs 719.75, Larsen & Toubro Rs 5.30 to Rs 149, Mahindra and Mahindra Rs 9.10 to Rs 162.90, MTNL Rs 5.90 to Rs 162.90, Nestle Rs 23.25 to Rs 466.50, NIIT Rs 70 to Rs 1531.50, Pentafour Software Rs 40.75 to Rs 552.75, Pfizer Rs 14 to Rs 847.75, Ranbaxy Rs 8.30 to Rs 257.10, Raymond Rs 5.30 to Rs 89.40.

Petrochem major Reliance advanced by Rs 4.50 to Rs 116.70.

Satyam Computers rose by Rs 6 to Rs 636, SBI by Rs 5.10 to Rs 155.20, Sterlite Industries Rs 8 to Rs 135.90. The engineering giant Telco in which foreign institutional investors buying was reported from Morgan Stanley gained by Rs 11.20 to Rs 152.50, Tisco Rs 7.75 to Rs 104.75, Tata Tea Rs 13.60 to Rs 307.80, Voltas Rs 6.55 to Rs 89.75 and Zee Telefilms Rs 46.75 to Rs 633.

The BSE-200 and Dollex indices closed higher by 9.45 and 3.67 points to 304.82 and 119.27 points from the previous close of 295.37 and 115.60 points respectively.

Total turnover on the BOLT system reported during the day was Rs 13.06 billion.

Satyam Computers topped the list of turnover by registering highest turnover of Rs 2.43 billion, followed by ITC Rs 1.67 billion, Zee Telefilms Rs 1.52 billion, Pentafour Software Rs 1.12 billion and Telco Rs 723.3 million.

Other actively traded scrips were Reliance (Rs 571.5 million), SBI (Rs 375 million), Castrol (Rs 362.4 million), Dr Reddy's (Rs 270.4 million), Infosys Technologies (Rs 229.8 million), Tata Tea (Rs 194.5 million), Nestle (Rs 159 million), ACC (Rs 150.5 million), Raymond (Rs 148.7 million) and MTNL (Rs 147.6 million).
